Buzzards Bay marine forecast
A harbor-by-harbor view of the Buzzards Bay marine forecast, from New Bedford to the passages around Woods Hole.
The regional picture
One body of water. More than one kind of boat day.
Buzzards Bay can look like one patch of water on a chart and several different boat days from the cockpit. A southwest breeze has room to build across the bay, while the entrances, coves, and passages around Falmouth can add their own current and sea-state wrinkles.
Use this page to compare the latest available briefings for harbors around the bay. Each destination keeps its wind, wave, tide, observation, and advisory sources visible, so a shared regional forecast never has to stand in for the local details.

Zone ANZ234, the southwest funnel, and when to stay in
Buzzards Bay is NWS marine zone ANZ234, forecast by NWS Boston/Norton. On most summer days the story is a southwest wind that builds through the afternoon. The bay's shape funnels it, and the shallow water turns it into steep, short chop. Read the zone forecast, check gusts and timing against your limits, and look at current timing anywhere near the Cape Cod Canal or Woods Hole.
The zone: ANZ234, Buzzards Bay
The NWS splits coastal waters into marine forecast zones. Buzzards Bay (ANZ234) sits next to Vineyard Sound (ANZ233), Rhode Island Sound (ANZ235), and Nantucket Sound (ANZ232), all forecast by NWS Boston/Norton. Advisories are usually issued for groups of these zones. The Small Craft Advisory on October 16, 2026 covered Nantucket Sound, Vineyard Sound, Buzzards Bay, Rhode Island Sound, and Block Island Sound together.
A zone forecast describes the zone as a whole. It cannot tell you that the water off the Elizabeth Islands is rougher than a tucked-in Falmouth harbor. The harbor cards above are the live comparison. This section is the reading that sits beside them.
The southwest funnel
NOAA's U.S. Coast Pilot 2 is the most useful official description of this bay. In summary: Buzzards Bay is open to winds from the south and southwest, which are common from spring through fall. Winds increase as they move from land out over the bay. The northeast-southwest orientation funnels southwesterlies, strengthening them from the mouth toward the head. Speeds are often double those at nearby land stations, and southwesterlies may keep blowing over the bay even when land stations report west or northwest winds.
As a general rule, southwesterlies blow harder close to the Elizabeth Islands than in the middle of the bay. Relatively shallow water makes waves steeper and closer together, which produces a stiff chop. In southerly or westerly gales there is a heavy sea in the western entrance to Vineyard Sound, and heavy seas at times off Quicks Hole.
In practice: if the land forecast for Wareham says breezy, do not use it to judge the bay. Read the marine zone forecast, and if a southwest wind is forecast to build, a morning run is usually the better bet than the afternoon.
Currents: the canal, Woods Hole, and the passages
Cape Cod Canal. The Coast Pilot puts the tidal current at the railroad bridge at about 4.0 knots on the flood, setting east, and 4.5 knots on the ebb, setting west, under ordinary conditions. The cause is the difference in tide range and timing between Buzzards Bay and Cape Cod Bay. Low-powered boats should wait for slack water or a favorable current, especially during spring tides. The west entrance is one of the worst spots in the area when the ebb out of the canal meets a brisk southwest wind.
Woods Hole. The current in the narrow part of Woods Hole Passage at times exceeds 4.5 knots, and the Coast Guard has reported up to 5.0 knots. Strong winds also shift both the speed of the current and the timing of slack water.
The holes between Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound have considerable current and need special attention, with tide rips where a sea runs against the current. In Onset Bay, the buoys in the entrance channel are frequently towed under by strong currents. The Coast Pilot lists a 5 mph speed limit above Wickets Island, and a 5-knot limit enforced by the Wareham Harbor Patrol on the Wareham River during the summer season. Check local regulations before you go.
For exact times, use NOAA tidal current predictions. Boat or Nope pulls those predictions in for locations that have a nearby current station.
Harbors around the bay
The harbors around the bay are exposed very differently, so check the one you are leaving from and the one you are heading to. The cards higher on this page are the live briefings. These are the same harbors, grouped the way a route usually runs.

Fall and winter on the bay
The season does not end when the summer crowd leaves, but the weather pattern changes. For nearby Nantucket Sound, the Coast Pilot says that from October through March, gales can be expected about 3 to 6 percent of the time, frequently from the west and northwest. The Small Craft Advisory on October 16, 2026, for northwest winds of 15 to 25 knots with gusts to 30 and seas of 3 to 5 feet, is a typical fall setup. If you are running to the yard for haul-out, pick the day by the forecast, not by the calendar.
How Boat or Nope makes the Buzzards Bay call
For any harbor on the bay, Boat or Nope checks each hour of the trip and gives a Go, Caution, or No-Go. Marine headlines for ANZ234 come first. A Gale, Storm, Special Marine, or Hazardous Seas Warning means No-Go. A Small Craft Advisory or Dense Fog Advisory caps the call at Caution.
Wind and gusts are checked against your boat's limits. If you have not set a gust limit, it defaults to your wind limit plus 5 knots, which matters here because a building southwesterly is often gusty. The official forecast wave height is used when it is available. If the app has to estimate seas from a buoy, the best possible call is Caution, and stale or distant buoy readings are thrown out.
Wind opposing a strong current (1.5 knots or more, or with 15 knots or more of wind) raises the call to Caution, and the reason line says so.
Questions about this bay
Which NWS marine zone covers Buzzards Bay?
Buzzards Bay is NWS marine zone ANZ234, forecast by the National Weather Service office in Boston/Norton, MA (BOX).
Why does Buzzards Bay get so choppy in the afternoon?
NOAA's Coast Pilot explains that the bay is open to south and southwest winds, common from spring through fall, and its northeast-southwest shape funnels and strengthens them toward the head of the bay. Speeds are often double those at nearby land stations, and the bay's shallow water makes the waves steeper and closer together, which produces a stiff chop.
How strong is the current in the Cape Cod Canal?
Under ordinary conditions NOAA's Coast Pilot gives about 4.0 knots on the flood (setting east) and 4.5 knots on the ebb (setting west) at the railroad bridge. Low-powered boats should wait for slack water or a favorable current. Daily predictions are at tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov.
Where is the roughest water near Buzzards Bay?
The Coast Pilot singles out the west entrance of the Cape Cod Canal, where the ebb out of the canal meets a brisk southwest wind. It also notes heavy seas in the western entrance to Vineyard Sound and at times off Quicks Hole in southerly or westerly gales, and currents over 4.5 knots in Woods Hole Passage.
Is there a speed limit in Onset Bay?
The Coast Pilot lists a 5 mph speed limit above Wickets Island in Onset Bay, and a 5-knot limit enforced by the Wareham Harbor Patrol on the Wareham River during the summer season. Check local regulations before you go.
